Starting a Bromley run club doesn’t have to mean sprinting until you’re out of breath. Whether you are aiming for your first ever 5km or you’re an intermediate runner chasing a 5km Personal Best (PB), the secret to success isn’t “going hard”—it’s going smart, discover our Bromley Run Club.
The Power of Starting Small
The biggest mistake new runners make is doing too much, too soon. This often leads to “gung-ho cardio” burnout or, worse, injuries like shin splints. At Unity23’s Bromley Run Club, our 12-week Summer Runner Series focuses on Progressive Intervals.
By starting with a mix of running and walking (like our Week 1 session: 30s run / 60s walk), you:
- Build Cardiovascular Stamina: Give your heart and lungs time to adapt without the stress of continuous running.
- Strengthen Joints: Running is high-impact; a slow build-up allows your tendons and ligaments to catch up with your muscles.
- Mental Wins: Completing a 15-minute interval session feels a lot better than failing a 15-minute continuous run on day one.
Mastering the Norman Park Parkrun
For many in our local community, the goal is the Bromley Park run at Norman Park. It is a fantastic, friendly, and free weekly 5k, but it can be intimidating if you haven’t prepared.
If you’re looking for a new PB or just want to cross the finish line without stopping, here are three tips for the Bromley Norman Park course:
- Start Steady: The Norman Park course is largely flat, but the excitement of the crowd can make you start too fast. Use the first 1km to find your rhythm.
- The “Thirds” Rule: Break the 5k into three parts. The first is for finding your feet, the second for holding a “comfortable hard” pace, and the final 1km for that sprint finish!
- Run with the Pack: It is much easier to keep your pace when you are running with others. This is why our Thursday evening sessions focus on community—we train together so you never feel left behind on race day.
