How Personal Training helps to Ditch the “Gym Dodger” Excuses

We had someone at the gym recently who called themselves a “long-term gym dodger,” and it got me thinking. How many of us find it super easy to come up with reasons to skip working out? Then, discover our personal training sessions, and start showing up regularly.

This person is now attending our personal training sessions twice a week, every week! They told us it’s because of the friendly vibe, workouts that aren’t boring, and feeling supported. And yeah, we’re proud of that stuff!

But honestly, I think it’s also about building good habits that stick. Maybe their partner gave them a little push, too. And we’re definitely here to keep them on track – we notice when they’re not here, and we give them a friendly reminder.

It’s about being responsible for your choices. We all have those days when things go wrong, like a cancelled train. But even then, there’s usually something we could have done differently, right? Like, maybe leaving the house a bit earlier.

The thing is, if we don’t take ownership of our actions, we’ll always find an excuse.

But there’s a big difference between holding yourself accountable and being too hard on yourself.

Check this out:

Meet Tom, who lives here in Bromley:

Tom missed his train because he hit snooze one too many times. Now, he’s got a few choices:

  1. Take Responsibility: “Okay, I overslept. I’ll set my alarm earlier tomorrow.”
  2. Beat Himself Up: “Ugh, I’m such a mess! Now I’m late for everything. What lie can I come up with?”
  3. Ignore It: “Whatever, that’s just how I am. I’m always late.”

Which voice sounds familiar?

Being held accountable isn’t just about someone else telling you what to do, although an added bonus of our personal training approach. It’s about how you talk to yourself. It’s about realising you have a say in your choices and making small changes that add up.

For those of us living in Greater London, juggling the school run, commuting, work, and everything else, finding time for fitness can be tricky. But with the right support (Personal Training) and a mindset shift, you can build healthy habits that last.
