The Holiday Myth: Why One Week Off Won’t Ruin Your Progress

It’s July in South East London, and the “pre-holiday panic” is in full swing. We see it every year: people either train until they’re burnt out before they fly, or worse, delay their start at the gym until “after the summer.”

At Unity23, we lean on science. Whether you’re heading to the coast or staying local in the Borough of Bromley, it’s time to debunk the myth that seven days of Vitamin D and a few sangrias will reset your progress to zero.

The Science of Reversibility: Your Gains are Stickier Than You Think

In exercise physiology, the Principle of Reversibility suggests that fitness levels drop when training stops. However, the timeline is much longer than a week in the sun. [1]

Research suggests that for most people, muscle atrophy (loss) doesn’t even begin until after 2 to 3 weeks of total inactivity. Your strength and cardiovascular base are remarkably resilient. In fact, according to this study on the effects of detraining, three weeks of cessation from training has been shown to result in no significant decrease in muscle thickness or strength in many athletes. A week of “active recovery”—walking or swimming—can actually help your central nervous system recover, meaning you often return to our Small Group Personal Training (SGPT) sessions stronger than when you left.

The Scale Scam: Alcohol, Carbs, and Water Retention

The biggest “holiday derailer” isn’t fat gain—it’s the scale. Many people return to Greater London, hop on the scales, and see a 3kg jump. Science tells us that it is physically impossible to gain pure fat gain.

  • Carbohydrates: Every gram of glycogen (stored carbs) your body holds onto carries about 3 to 4 grams of water. Holiday meals are usually carb-heavy, leading to temporary water weight.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol causes the body to release an anti-diuretic hormone, leading to significant water retention and bloating the next day.

This “sudden weight gain” is almost entirely fluid. It’s a temporary shift in your internal chemistry, not a permanent change in your body composition. Once you get back to your routine at Unity23, that water weight usually drops off within 48 to 72 hours.

Don’t Wait Until September

The biggest mistake you can make is delaying your start. If you start training now, you build metabolic momentum. Entering your holiday with a higher muscle mass and a revved-up metabolism means your body handles those extra holiday calories much more efficiently.

Our head coach McCartney always says: “Consistency isn’t about being perfect; it’s about shortening the distance between your off-track moments.” If you wait until after your holiday to start, you’ve lost 8 weeks of potential progress. If you start now, your holiday becomes a well-earned rest in the middle of a winning streak.

Get Back on Track

The secret to summer fitness isn’t avoiding the holiday; it’s the speed at which you get back under the bar when you land back in London. Don’t let a temporary scale spike turn into a permanent hiatus. Get Started Today and build the foundation that a week away can’t touch.
